History of Grama Panchayat

Kodumon is a region with a rich historical legacy that dates back to the Sangam Age, one of the golden periods of South Indian history. The name "Kodumon" literally means "Land of Gold." The celebrated Sangam poet Kapilar, in his work Pathitrupathu, refers to the exquisite gold ornaments crafted in Kodumon, reflecting the region's ancient reputation for gold craftsmanship. It is also believed that gold was mined at Ponnaduthamkuzhi, near Idathitta.

Kodumon is also renowned as the birthplace of Sakthibhadra, the eminent Sanskrit scholar and playwright who authored the classical drama Aascharyachoodamani. He established the Chenneerkara Swarupam and ruled the region, making significant contributions to South India's literary and cultural heritage.

Historical evidence suggests that Kodumon maintained close ties with Buddhist culture during the centuries following the Sangam period. Legends associated with Chandanapally and the discovery of Buddha idols while clearing the Kodumon Kuttivanam forest testify to this connection. Chandanapally became a center where Buddhist and Hindu traditions coexisted harmoniously.

The Chandanapally Valiyapally (St. George Orthodox Church), located near the site of an ancient fort, stands as a symbol of Hindu-Christian harmony. The presence of an ancient stone cross and the participation of Hindu devotees in the annual church festival reflect the enduring spirit of communal unity in the region.

Kodumon is home to several ancient temples that highlight its rich religious heritage. The Kodumon Palliyara Temple, believed to be one of the few temples in India where a spider is worshipped, is particularly unique. The Angadikkal Mampilavil Vishnu Temple, known for its rare water consecration (Jala Prathishta), the Sakthimangalam Temple with its large idol of Lord Ganesha, and the mural paintings once found in the Vaikunthapuram Temple are among the area's notable cultural landmarks.

The 1891 publication Memoir of the Travancore Survey, prepared by Lieutenant Ward and Conner, documents the geography, agriculture, and communities of the four regions that formed the Kodumon Sub-Division. This valuable record provides important insights into the area's historical development.

The social reform movements and the Indian freedom struggle profoundly influenced Kodumon during the early twentieth century. Social reformers such as Ayyankali and C. Kesavan actively worked in this region to eliminate social inequalities and improve the lives of marginalized communities. The implementation of land reforms later became a major milestone in the socio-economic transformation of the area.

Religious and community organizations played a significant role in establishing educational institutions, while public libraries that have served the region for decades stand as symbols of the community's commitment to education, knowledge, and social awareness.

Until the mid-twentieth century, Kodumon faced widespread poverty, unemployment, and economic hardship. A major turning point came with the establishment of the Kodumon Rubber Plantation in 1959. Nearly 9,000 acres of forest land were converted into a public-sector rubber plantation following years of public struggle, making it one of Kerala's pioneering public plantation projects.

Another significant chapter in Kodumon's history was the 1971 Idathitta Agricultural Labour Harvest Strike, which brought about far-reaching changes in the agricultural sector. The movement inspired similar struggles in other parts of Kerala and strengthened the rights of agricultural workers. Numerous labour movements were also organized in the Kodumon Plantation to secure fair wages and better working conditions.

Historically, Kodumon was also an important centre of trade and industry. Merchants from present-day Tamil Nadu visited Chandanapally for commercial activities, while historical records indicate that gold mining and gold-related industries flourished at Ponnaduthamkuzhi.

Today, Kodumon Grama Panchayat proudly preserves its rich heritage of history, literature, religious harmony, social reform, agriculture, and cultural diversity, making it one of the historically significant regions of Kerala.
